General Description
This Curriculum is directed at a technical audience including product designers, testers, system architects and engineers. WCDMA Fundamentals provides an understanding of this newly proposed 3rd generation wireless standard. Topics covered include basic system properties and specifications, cell layout, channel structure, synchronization, spreading and modulation, coding and interleaving, power control, hand-offs, receiver techniques and performance, and system harmonization.

Curriculum Prerequisites
The Galbraith Media Curriculums entitled Next Generation Wireless: 3G Overview is recommended or experience in CDMA based systems.

Author and Subject Matter Expert
The author and subject matter expert is Dr. Roshdy Hafez of Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario. Dr Hafez holds a M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Alexandria, Egypt (1974) and a Ph.D. (1978), also in Electrical Engineering, from Carleton University. In 1980, he joined the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering, Carleton University as an assistant professor. He became a full professor in 1989. Dr. Hafez has more than 20 years’ experience in the areas of mobile communications and spectrum engineering. He has taught and lectured extensively in wireless and related areas. His current research focuses on CDMA-based wireless systems and adaptive signal processing. He has acted as a consultant to government agencies and telecommunications companies including the Canadian Department of Communications (now Industry Canada), Nortel and Bell Mobility. Dr. Hafez has been actively involved in TRIO and CITR. Between 1994 and 1998, he was a TRIO project leader on CDMA PCS networks.
