The author and subject matter expert Professor Edward (Ted) H. Sargent was appointed Nortel Junior Professor of Emerging Technologies on July 1 1998. Prof. Sargent received the B.Sc. degree in Engineering Physics from Queen's University in 1995. He joined the group of Prof. Jimmy Xu as a M.A.Sc. student in 1995; transferred in 1996 to the doctoral program; and in 1998 completed the Ph.D. degree in Photonics, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. While a student at the University of Toronto, he was supported variously by the Ontario Centre for Materials Research, Photonics Research Ontario, an Ontario Graduate Scholarship, and an NSERC scholarship. His research was funded by Nortel Technology, Bellcore, and Corning, and involved collaborations with these organizations as well as with the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. In may 1998, Prof. Sargent competed for and was offered the position of Assistant Professor and holder of the Nortel Junior Chair in Emerging Technologies, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Toronto. Prof. Sargent has worked with researchers at Nortel Networks since 1991, first as an employee, and later as a collaborator. In his new role he is developing and leading new collaborations on innovative enabling technologies for future Photonic communication systems; on improve approaches to the design of Photonic systems and networks; and on novel materials and devices, including highly processable polymers with promising electronic and optical properties.
